Penny McLean studied under Sir William Gillies and Sir Robin Phillipson at Edinburgh College of Art and her style is strongly influenced by her early exposure to Scottish Painting. She also found inspiration in the paintings of Joan Eardley, whose work she much admires. The Scottish Painters’ love of colour, texture, expressive brushwork and the natural rhythms of the landscape are reflected in her work. She is drawn to the more unusual aspect rather than the obvious and the contrast of the quality of light in different parts of the world; be it the clarity of light in the Mediterranean countries, the softer tones of the Wolds or the luminescence of the sea and the vivid colours of bracken and lichen up on the North- West coast of Scotland. She has shown work in several Yorkshire Galleries and, in May, was again ‘Artist in Residence’ at Burton Agnes Hall.
