I aim to make pots that are aesthetically pleasing but which are also useful, so in effect my work is a fusion of creativity and function.
An on-going fascination with pottery from ancient history coupled with frequent visits to galleries and studios have provided inspiration, helped generate new ideas and been the impetus for experiments with form and colour. It is this personal journey of discovery which I believe is an essential part of the creative process.
The pots have simplicity of line and exhibit precision in their making: smoothly curved forms are particularly important to me, especially for the profiles of jugs and the interiors of bowls.
My work combines wheel thrown and hand building techniques, and I use glazes which produce a subtle variegation of colour, breaking on the texture and scraffito lines of the decoration, and so enhancing the form by providing tension and contrast on an otherwise smooth surface.
